History of Williamstown, Massachusetts
Located along the Mohawk Trail, the area that became Williamstown was once a popular hunting ground for the Mohican tribes in the area. Its location along the border of the Dutch colonies of New York led to its strategic settlement in 1749. Colonel Ephraim Williams, who died during the French and Indian War, willed a portion of his wealth to the town to put towards the creation of a āfree schoolā for the children in the area. His only stipulation was that the settlement become a town named in his honor. So in 1765, two years after the conclusion of the French and Indian War, the town was officially incorporated as Williamstown. The āfree school,ā funded by Williams, was opened in 1791, but it was converted into a college, just two years later. The presence of Williams College had a large impact on what was once a small farming community. During the Industrial Revolution, the construction of various large mills helped build up the townās economy. Then, in the latter half of the 1800s, the Williamstown Rail Yard was opened which brought in tourists and stimulated population growth. The town continued growing steadily into what it is now. Today, Williamstown is thriving with Williams College still remaining as the townās focal point and fueling the areaās cultural intrigue.
