History of North Adams, Massachusetts

The area along the Hoosic River (that is now a part of North Adams) was first settled in 1745 by the families of British soldiers involved in King George’s War. Following the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, which ended the War of the Austrian Succession, the soldiers stationed along the Hoosic River in Massachusetts opted to take portions of land in lieu of payment for their military service. The town (initially called East Hoosac) was officially laid out in 1749. It quickly became a highly productive agricultural mill town due to the water power provided by the two connecting branches of the Hoosic River. The shift from agriculture to industry was sparked in the 1850s as residents pushed for the creation of a large railroad line that would run through the Hoosac Mountain. The official introduction of the Hoosac Tunnel in 1876 made the town a terminal for six busy railway lines. The subsequent increase in population led to a decision to split the town of East Hoosac. The town of North Adams was officially incorporated in 1878 and later reincorporated as a city in 1895. Over the years, North Adams was home to major manufacturing industries such as Arnold Print Works (1860-1942), and the Sprague Electric Company which bought the print works site in 1942. Sprague Electric closed in 1985, leaving much of the city unemployed. Finding a new use for the now empty site was essential. John Barrett III, serving as mayor at the time, suggested offering the complex to Thomas Krens to be used as a site for contemporary art exhibitions. The idea grew and took shape and the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art was opened in 1999. The now famous museum sparked an economic shift in North Adams that led to it becoming the bustling cultural hub it is today.
